Cedar Children’s Academy Celebrates World Day of Cultural Diversity with Creativity, Community and Colour

June 5, 2026 03:33pm

Cedar Children’s Academy came alive with music, colour and cultural pride as pupils, staff and visitors joined together to celebrate World Day of Cultural Diversity on Thursday 21st May 2026. The event highlighted the rich blend of heritages within our school community and offered children a meaningful opportunity to explore and express their identities.

A Carnival Start to the Day

The celebrations began with an unforgettable whole‑school assembly led by Irie! Steel Pan Workshops, a vibrant steel band group who brought the sounds of the Caribbean straight into our hall. Their lively performance filled the school with a carnival atmosphere, setting the tone for a joyful day of cultural exploration.

Following the assembly, the group stayed on to deliver hands‑on workshops for Year 5 and Year 6, who have been studying Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. Pupils learned about the origins of steel pan music, explored its cultural significance, and even had the chance to try playing the instruments themselves. The workshops were a highlight of the day, giving children a deeper connection to the Caribbean cultures they have been learning about.

A Day of Cultural Expression

Children and staff were invited to come to school dressed in clothing that represented their culture, heritage or personal identity. The corridors were filled with traditional outfits, vibrant colours and excited conversations as pupils shared stories about where they come from and what makes their backgrounds unique.

Throughout the day, classes followed their usual timetables, but the at different points were dedicated to hands‑on cultural art workshops delivered in partnership with the Rochester Grammar School (RGS). These sessions were supported by three visiting Art teachers and fourteen enthusiastic Year 10 GCSE Art students, who worked alongside our pupils to guide them through a series of creative cultural projects.

Creative Workshops Across the School

Each year group took part in a bespoke art activity inspired by a different part of the world:

  • Year 2 – Australia: Aboriginal Pebble Paintings
Pupils explored Aboriginal art traditions by painting symbolic designs onto large pebbles using earthy acrylic colours. Templates and visual guides helped children understand the meaning behind the patterns and animals they created.

  • Year 3 – Italy: Venetian Mask Making
Inspired by the elegance of Venetian carnival masks, children decorated their own mask templates using metallic paints, feathers, sequins, ribbons and more. The results were wonderfully theatrical and full of personality.

  • Year 4 – France: Parisian Collage with Mono‑Printing
Year 4 pupils experimented with mono‑printing techniques and collage materials in the colours of the French flag. Their final pieces captured iconic Parisian imagery through a blend of printmaking and layered tissue paper.

These workshops were made possible thanks to careful planning, resource preparation and collaboration between Cedar staff and the visiting RGS team. The support from the GCSE helpers added an extra layer of encouragement and expertise for our pupils.

A Taste of the World

To complement the day’s cultural theme, the school kitchen served a special international menu, including:

  • Spanish Chicken Paella
  • Chinese‑style vegetable noodles
  • American brownies for dessert

The themed lunch added to the sense of global celebration and gave pupils a chance to try flavours from around the world.

Showcase Event: Celebrating Our Children’s Work

The celebrations continued on Friday 22nd May, when families were invited to a special after‑school showcase. Doors opened at 3:30pm, giving parents and carers the opportunity to view the artwork, projects and cultural learning their children had been working on throughout the week.

The turnout was fantastic, and the atmosphere was filled with pride as pupils shared their creations and explained the cultural inspirations behind them.

A Community United Through Diversity

World Day of Cultural Diversity at Cedar Children’s Academy was a joyful reminder of the strength and beauty found in our differences. The event brought together pupils, staff, families and external partners in a shared celebration of identity, creativity and community.

We extend our thanks to everyone involved—our dedicated staff, the visiting RGS art team, Irie! Steel Pan Workshops, the GCSE student helpers, and of course our wonderful pupils and families. Your enthusiasm and support made this celebration truly special.

We look forward to many more opportunities to honour the diverse voices and stories that make Cedar Children’s Academy such a vibrant place to learn and grow.
